Coaching is a one-on-one relationship between a coach and a client that supports personal and professional change, based on the client’s individual goals. Each coaching connection is a unique relationship, guided by the client’s needs, hopes and goals; the role of a coach is to ask powerful questions, to listen, and to empower the client to take action about the things that are most important to them.
when would coaching be helpful for me?
Coaching is helpful anytime you have something going on in your life you would like to shift, in any area — home, work, physical, creative, spiritual. Coaching is helpful when…
you feel stuck in a pattern that doesn’t feel great and you want something different
you feel an itch to do something but you aren’t sure what
you think you might want to try something different but aren’t sure what or how
you are excited about a new idea and need help shaping it
you want support to start something new
you need an accountability partner to keep you motivated
you have a secret dream you’ve never talked about out loud
you have a secret fear you’ve never talked about out loud
you feel overwhelmed by what’s happening around you
you feel ungrounded
you yearn for more joy
you want to better understand why you make the choices you are making
you feel like you would like your life to have more meaning
you feel like what you’re doing isn’t satisfying you
you wish you had more of a chance to live your values or purpose
you need a place to be with deep grief, loss or fear
you need a place to be with joy and excitement
you feel confused by all the possibilities
you don’t see any new possibilities
In other words — coaching is helpful anytime you want to shift something in any aspect of your life.
What actually happens in coaching?
A coaching session is a conversation, usually on video or on the phone. Mostly, we are talking, though sometimes you might draw, write or move around in different ways — part of coaching is learning to deepen your awareness of what is happening in your life, which includes being attuned to what’s happening in your body. Sometimes we also do creative things to explore new ideas — always in ways that match who you are.
My sessions are 30, 45 or 60 minutes, scheduled in a way that works for you — weekly, biweekly or monthly.
Most sessions result in some kind of actions, ranging from journaling on a question or topic to taking concrete steps toward a new goal. This “homework” comes out of whatever is important to the client.
Before each session, I usually ask my clients to do a little reflection on insights or accomplishments since the previous session, and to come prepared with an idea of the topic they want to work on that day.
